Elizabeth A. Davis, Columbia University
This poster will present the content of the newly-acquired collection of works by and related to Serge Prokofiev placed on deposit at Columbia University by the Serge Prokofiev Foundation. Established in 1983 by Lina Prokofiev, the composer’s widow, the Foundation’s collection contains archival material under its control from Prokofiev’s 18 years in the west. Presented in the poster is a description of this archival material, including Prokofiev’s private and business papers from 1919 through May 1936, after which he returned to the Soviet Union with his family. Also present are music manuscripts, including sketches, drafts and full manuscripts for over 30 works, principally written during the years that Prokofiev spent in the United States, Germany and Paris. The primary resource materials also include manuscripts previously only available in photocopy form.
